Abstract: Complex problems are difficult to solve because they involve conflicting values, interests and perspectives and/or require highly specialized knowledge. Complexity has always posed challenges for democracy, especially in a context where there is an abundance of information and growing political polarization. In this paper, we analyze four cases that have in common the centrality of citizen participation in discussion and deliberation as an alternative for dealing with complex issues: political reform, gene editing, abortion and environmental disasters. The aim is to see what lessons we can learn from the cases when we consider participation as a democratic response to dealing with complexity.
