Abstract: Faced with the rapid rise of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), an emerging technology that has sparked reflection and provoked challenges for scientific work, the purpose of this practical guide is to discuss and promote its ethical and responsible use, demystifying the hype surrounding GAI. Aimed at researchers, universities and scientific institutions, the guide briefly introduces the operating principles, including the current limitations of this technology, such as biases and risks to privacy and academic integrity. It then establishes fundamental principles for the use of IAG in scientific research, such as the preservation of human agency and ethically guided use. In addition to these principles, the guide also presents practical guidelines for using IAG, according to the most common uses in academic research activities, positioning it as a complementary tool. With an eye to the Brazilian reality, this book proposes a collaborative approach, calling for the sovereign development of Artificial Intelligence in the country.
