Abstract: The recent protests by self-styled anti-fascist supporters have raised the profile of political actions by soccer fans. How can these actions be conceptually defined in order to differentiate them from other activities carried out by soccer fans? In this article, we suggest that the concept of “activism” defined as the collective defense of contentious causes is a useful analytical key for studying this phenomenon. In search of evidence of activism among soccer fans, we carried out a non-systematic review of the literature on soccer fans and politics in Brazil and an exploratory empirical survey of soccer fans based on a documentary survey on social media and interviews with their members. The results indicated the existence of such a phenomenon by showing that soccer is a field marked by diverse conflicts in relation to which “activist supporters” have acted collectively in defense of contentious causes.
