On Friday, October 31, INCT Participa, NDAC/Cebrap, and NUPAD/UFES hosted the launch seminar of the collection Consequências de Movimentos Sociais nas políticas públicas no Brasil: diversidade teórica e de casos (Edufes, 2025) at the Cebrap auditorium in São Paulo.

The volume is organized by researchers Euzeneia Carlos (NUPAD), Monika Dowbor (NDAC) and Maria do Carmo Albuquerque (NDAC), all affiliated with INCT Participa.

The launch event featured two panels. The first, “Social Movements and the Justice System in Public Policy for Children and Adolescents,” included Maria do Carmo Albuquerque, Maria Cristina Vicentin (USP/NEU), Flávio Frasseto (Public Defender’s Office/SP), Daltin Assis (Social Policy Analyst), and Sueli Santiago (CEDECA Sapopemba).

The panel presented accounts from the authors and activists working in child and adolescent policy who followed the transformation of Febem into Fundação Casa. “These were biographical and emotional accounts about the relationships between movements, young people and adolescents, mothers, and the State. It was very moving. It is important to highlight the presence of civil society, activists, and social movements speaking about this experience, which is part of one of the chapters of the book,” said Monika Dowbor, one of the editors of the volume.

The second panel focused on the book itself and was composed of Monika Dowbor, Euzeneia Carlos, Sandra Gomes (UFRN), and Renata Bichir (EACH-USP), who presented the work and discussed its contributions to the debate on the consequences of social movements in public policy.

“In this panel, it was possible to see how the field has advanced in analyzing how movements influence the State and help reduce inequalities. The book has this beauty: on one hand, a diversity of cases—agrarian, cycling, health, adolescent rights, human rights—and on the other, a diversity of theoretical approaches, showing the importance of Brazilian social movements in shaping policies and contesting political and societal projects,” Monika highlighted.
