Núcleo Participação e Democracia (NUPAD), brings together researchers affiliated with the Graduate Program in Social Sciences and the Undergraduate Program in Social Sciences at the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES). Listed in the CNPq directory of research groups in Brazil, the Center was founded to investigate how civil society participation and participatory institutions contribute to strengthening and deepening democracy. Over time, this research agenda has expanded to include studies on social movements’ collective action, various forms of activism, and their interactions with the state in policy formulation and implementation. By focusing on the effects of institutionalization on collective action, as well as the political, cultural, and social impacts of social movements, the research agenda now explores the relationship between social actors and political institutions, particularly the executive, the legislature, and political parties.
