Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisas da Complexidade Amazônica (Center for Amazonian Complexity Studies)
UFAM (ICSEZ) Campus Parintins
The Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisa da Complexidade Amazônica comprises researchers from the Universidade Federal do Amazonas, Parintins campus. This interdisciplinary center aims to understand and disseminate the various expressions of the socio-environmental issue in the Amazon region and their impact on the participatory practices and mobilization efforts of Amazonian peoples, particularly in the Lower Amazon region. Aligned with the INCT Participa proposal – Transformations in Participation, Associativism, and Political Contention – the center's Associativisms and Social Movements in the Amazon research line seeks to map and characterize patterns of ethnic-territorial associativism in the Lower Amazon region. We believe that understanding the repertoires of associativism rooted in ethnicity and territory, along with their social bases and claims, enriches the discussion in the literature on participation. This is accomplished by highlighting territorial conflicts, territorialities, and ethnicities as essential mobilizing resources, which are often overlooked in certain areas of academic work in this field. The final outputs produced by the center members aim to shed light on the collective, solidarity-driven, and resistance-oriented ways of life of Amazonian peoples as a means of countering economic policies that undermine their rights, harm the environment, and threaten their traditional territories. The group collaborates with social movements, associations, cooperatives, artisanal entrepreneurs, and traditional communities to find solutions that promote social inclusion and improve living conditions.
